Plant files are the main files used in PlantStudio. They contain information on how to grow and draw each plant. Use the main window File menu to open, close and save plant files. The name of the open plant file appears in the title bar of the PlantStudio main window.

Tips on working with plant files in PlantStudio

You can open only one plant file at a time in PlantStudio.

If you open a plant file and you can see plants in the plant list but nothing in the drawing area, choose Scale to Fit from the Layout menu to reorient the plants.

To change whether PlantStudio opens the most recently opened file when it starts up, choose Preferences from the Edit menu on the main window, click the Miscellaneous tab, and check or uncheck the check box labeled Open most recent file at start.

If you save a file and overwrite another file with the same name, PlantStudio automatically creates a backup file. The backup file will have the same name as the file you save, except that the file extension will start with a tilde character (~). For example, saving a BMP file over an existing one will result in two files, one ending with .bmp and one ending with .~bm. So if you save a file and regret it, rename the backup file and start again. You cant turn this off.

PlantStudio 2.0 uses a new version 2.0 of the PlantStudio file format (*.pla). The 1.0 and 2.0 formats are forward and backward compatible. That is. PlantStudio 1.x can read version 2.0 files and display them properly (ignoring parameters for the new 2.0 flower parts). PlantStudio 2.x can read version 1.0 files and display them properly, though all of the parameters new to PlantStudio 2.0 will be set to defaults. If you open a version 1.0 plant and save it in PlantStudio 2.x, it will turn into a 2.x file.
