Nesting plant parts for 3D export
Some 3D file formats provide a facility for grouping lines and polygons into structures by creating multiply nested structures (e.g., unions in POV, groups in VRML). Depending on how you want to use the plants you export, you might want to use these structures to break plants up into meaningful parts. For example, you might want to be able to rotate or color a flower independent of the rest of the plant. If you are unsure how this will look or affect your plants, consult your 3D program’s documentation, and look at a PlantStudio-generated file with a text editor to see how the nesting structures are created.
PlantStudio supports these nesting levels for formats that read them:
▪ lumping leaves together with their petioles (leaf stalks)
▪ lumping all the leaflets in a compound leaf into one union
▪ lumping all the flowers in an inflorescence together into one union
▪ lumping each flower or fruit together with its pedicel (flower stalk)
▪ lumping pistils and stamens into nested structures (one for each)
To change nesting options,
▪ In the Nest panel of the 3D export window, check the check box for each level of nesting you want to use.
▪ If you can’t find the Nest panel on the window, it means that the export type you picked doesn’t support nesting in this way. (Usually things that support nesting don’t support grouping, and vice versa.)
